STAR OF THE YEAR: 2010

LUKMAN SARDI

A 39-year-old Man Cannot Be Underestimated

We feel there is nothing wrong with Lukman Sardi being crowned as our STAR OF THE YEAR. This is the time. Such moments are rarely found in our country. An artist get an absolute credibility status within one year. Who can do?

The son of a big star, yet he was surprisingly far from glam life. Practically normal social life. Almost nobody knows that he pursued acting before Gie (2005). In his childhood, he has supported a number of films such as: Kembang-Kembang Plastik (1978) and Pengemis dan Tukang Becak (1979). But it's in a film directed by Riri Riza that Lukman finally found his momentum.

Post-Gie, he's done a great leap forward from a supporting to a leading role in Rudi Soedjarwo's 9 Naga. Unexpectedly, his appearance as a hitman bagged him applause that never subsides. Dozens of films have been completed in short years. Perhaps, other than Tora Sudiro, he was the busiest actor in this decade. Although some of Lukman's works were not too good.

Can we say, he fell several times in choosing roles. These include: Pesan dari Surga (2006), The Photograph (2007), Kawin Kontrak (2008) and Merah Putih (2009). In the first film, he couldn't turn himself into a gay naturally. He looked so awkward. In the last three films, he (again) looked plain and lack of self-confidence.

Lukman's eyes are not only his strength but also his weakness in the same way. With this eye, he can play all the different kinds of genres and roles. But with this forte he can't help it either. Lukman's eyes are the eyes of actors, very honest.

No doubt, hard work and dedication has paid off very well. Some of best offerings from Lukman, among others e.g. : as Herman Lantang in Gie (2005), as Marwan in 9 Naga (2006), as Paklik in Berbagi Suami (2006), as Umar in Nagabonar Jadi 2 (2007), as Piktor in Quickie Express (2007), as Aryan Hidayat in In the Name of Love (2008), as Gandang in May (2008), as Yopie in Red CobeX (2010), as Amir in -he's playing better here than before- Darah Garuda (2010) and of course... as Ahmad Dahlan in Sang Pencerah (2010).

In the full hands of Hanung Bramantyo, Lukman finally has the reputation as an actor of calibre. This was the coveted role of any actors. Being the title role, playing in the biopic film, technically speaking; was one of this year's best! Lukman has been deserved for this great role. He successfully placed himself in the front line with this work.

Do you still need a proof? Sang Pencerah had innumerable of wonderful scenes and sequences. A random example, a sequence at the Kweekschool Jetis, Yogyakarta. When he teaches first-class students about the importance of saying "Alhamdulillah". Things only Lukman can do.

We could care less about the Festival Film Indonesia (FFI) result this year. Because one admirable work has been wasted there. Yes, hopefully Lukman and Hanung know that their film was successful commercially and artistically, also becomes our nation's pride. Plus, there was a reliable actor in it!

STAR OF THE YEAR: 2009

ATIQAH HASIHOLAN

This girl started her professional film career in 2006 through movie Berbagi Suami (Love for Share). She was the one who played one of Pak Haji's (El Manik) young wives. Not many know that Tika (her nickname) started her career from theater. She had joined theater since she was an elementary school student. Afterward, her performance that stole the attention was in a horror-flick by Viva Westi, Suster N (2007). Here's the first time we have to appreciate Tika's acting via GeA (Guardians e-Awards) as one of the Leading Actress nominees. A year later she became a karaoke girl in Cinta Setaman (2008). This year she entered again the same box with Jamila dan Sang Presiden (J&SP). Unfortunately she lost once again, this year Ayu Laksmi's work in Under the Tree has been chosen by the voters more. However, Tika has successfully played a supporting role as good as main role in one year. This is what makes MG (Mellyana's Guardians) appreciate her performances and we finally decided she is the Star of the Year.

During 2009, Tika has played in three quality films. They were: Pintu Terlarang (PT), J&SP and Ruma Maida (RM). In PT, she played Claudia - a supporting role- Herosase receptionist. In MG's movie review of PT, we praised Tika has a better chance to play Talyda (played by Marsha Timothy). After that she appeared in J&SP as the leading role, a movie tells about human trafficking, directed by her own mother, Ratna Sarumpaet. Here, her acting talent looked more natural and she didn't hesitate to appear without makeup on her face. But her best performance of the year is in RM of course. As an idealistic young woman named Maida - again in the leading role- who fight for education. In this beautiful film directed by Teddy Soeriaatmadja, Tika was able to connect viewers to the era where nationalism to strive for. Through this role she's been nominated as the Best Actress in Festival Film Indonesia (FFI) for the first time.

No one denied when calling her pretty and talented. Of course we could not agree more. In addition, she used to pursue modeling. But she became very attractive because of the way she set her career is different from other young artists. She has a special uniqueness. Tika doesn't sell gossips and physical beauty to be noticed by people. She's not an instant star nor chasing popularity. Her arrival has given a different shade for Indonesian showbiz. She can be a role model for every newcomer, that to be successful do not follow trend. Everybody should have an idealism and don't be a commodity. That's what we see from Atiqah Hasiholan, our STAR OF THE YEAR.

STAR OF THE YEAR: 2008

Our Star of the Year is the same person who was our choice for last year's Star of Tomorrow.

Milestones:

Acha Septriasa just missed our top five in the Best Actress category last year for her stellar work in Love is Cinta, but Kabir Bhatia's Love was to be the movie that would push her over the top. Playing a country teenage-girl with the Sundanese accent, Septriasa made us come to love the character of Iin even as she was using teen-speak that was almost alien in tone. The wonderful thing about Love is that she's not all tough talk. There are moments in the film when she is genuinely vulnerable, especially when she learns that the former loverboy is not quite the man she expected him to be. It's a revelation of a performance, and one that is already opening many doors for the young actress.

Her success in that role was followed by a lead turn in a performance we have voted the second best of this year, Rudi Soedjarwo's In the Name of Love. Septriasa as Saskia Puteri Negara is perfectly casted and makes her seem like a role model to many little girls. She is quite gifted, in my opinion, and I think she played the part very well. When she spoke to her father (Roy Marten, former actor), "Life is man's best friend, right Dad? But not in our house,” we can feel her anguish. Her dramatic scenes are truly convincing and very strong, making us believe all her anguish and sorrow.

With such diverse roles in both mainstream blockbuster Heart (2006) and disturbing film Love is Cinta (2007), young actress Acha Septriasa was set to make a major splash in 2007. The buzz surrounding the young actress was validated a year later when Septriasa turned in a startling performance in the Valentine's Day gig, Love, for which she was awarded the Best Leading Actress by the voters for Guardians e-Awards (GeA) 2008.

Metamorphosis:

Born on Sept. 01, 1989 and raised in Jakarta, Septriasa developed an early interest in performing. By age 15, she had became the finalist of Gadis Sampul 2004 and soon after snagged her first role as Mitha in the popular big-budget movie, Apa Artinya Cinta? (2005).

In 2006, Septriasa continued her busy schedule. She appeared in the most popular movie of that year, Heart as Luna. Septriasa’s next film brought the young actress her first major publicity – Love is Cinta in which she appeared as a regular heroine. But her histrionic capability was remarkable. Just 18 years old, her performance garnered her a Best Actress Award nomination in Festival Film Indonesia 2007.

Finally, we talk about Love, one of the year’s most-talked-about films. Her bright, quirky and funny performance earned Septriasa kudos from many critics and she received her first acting recognition with a GeA nod for Best Leading Actress voted by viewers. This time, she's been named MG's Star of the Year.

STAR OF THE YEAR: 2007

Here Comes the Star!

Most Favorite Actor of the Year.
Most Successful TV Serial of the Year*

Only one name, Dude Harlino.

He underwent a metamorphosis from “immature” (Ada Apa Denganmu) to “catchy” (Cincin) to “sophistication” (Intan). Yeah! We are talking about the next best thing in our showbiz. The current Heartrob. Dude has dethroned the likes of Ari Wibowos, Anjasmaras, Tora Sudiros and the rest. While his rivals are cooling their heels, Dude is riding high on his new found success.

It all began with Cincin and Intan becoming the biggest hits in recent times. He has proved that he is capable of doing more than just looking good and gyrating alongside leading actresses. The success of Cincin is reflecting on his personality. And it took a heart-tugging performance in Intan to make people aware that he was no push-over as an actor. He’s also matured into a fine actor along the way. Today, he’s capable of handling variety of roles, from a love-struck teenager to a Mr. Man, with consummate ease.

The past year has been Dude’s year, a giddy, intoxicating 12 months in which the back-to-back successes of Cincin, Anakku Bukan Anakku, Intan & Aisyah have catapulted his past constellation of more established actor to become STAR OF THE YEAR.

His new release, Cahaya, is the latest feather in his cap. Given a good cript & credible direction, he can score easily. He has proved once again that he isn’t a non-actor.
